Expect the Unexpected Daytrip featuring: Fort Smith and the Arkansas Missouri Railroad 11/7/2020 8:00 am $165.00
Experience Fort Smith, Arkansas! Discover the real America and explore the original gateway to the Wild West, where Native American culture and the old west meet for the first time. Our tour begins on the Arkansas Missouri Railroad! The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad's special passenger train services offer you 'A Window Seat to History' -- an opportunity to travel in the style of a bygone era. You can still enjoy the leisurely elegance of real train travel through the mountains and valleys of Northwest Arkansas. Over trestles with views for miles and through a quarter mile tunnel, your journey will take you all the way to the top of the scenic Boston Mountains and into the historic Arkansas River Basin. The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is one of the few commercial lines left in the United States that operates both freight and passenger service. All of the passengers travel the regular working rails in refurbished antique passenger or parlor coaches. Whatever your reason to take the train, you are almost guaranteed to leave the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad with a feeling of nostalgic joy in your heart. Then, we visit “Miss Laura’s Social Club.” Located inside of Fort Smith’s historic downtown area, Miss Laura’s is the only house of ill-repute that stood the test of time. Now, it is the only former bordello on the National Register of Historic Places, and has been fully restored to its original grandeur. This Victorian mansion has become a prominent symbol of this once boisterous border town’s very colorful past. We continue our tour with a guided tour of Fort Smith where we learn about the early days, witness the awe-inspiring murals painted along Garrison Ave by world-renowned artists, and discover the timeless architecture found in the 22-block Belle Grove historic district. Finally, we continue our journey back in time at the Clayton House! Standing regally in the Belle Grove Historic District, the Clayton House serves as a living history book of Fort Smith’s elegant Victorian period during the city’s frontier beginnings on the border of Indian Territory. The Clayton House provides a step back to 1882, the year William Henry Harrison Clayton moved his family into the antebellum home that he doubled in size and shaped into an Italianate-style masterpiece. Coal-burning fireplaces and period furnishings in each room place you in a time that featured no indoor plumbing or electricity, but that was rich with austerity. Our guided tour provides a perspective of the mission to bring law and justice to the area from the home of the chief prosecutor of the famous court of Judge Isaac C. Parker. We will end our time in Fort Smith with an included dinner at the Clayton House made especially and privately for our group! Join us on our journey back in time- and not too far from home- and discover the wonders of Fort Smith! TOUR INCLUDES: Roundtrip motorcoach transportation, Train Ride on Arkansas Missouri Railroad, lunch included on train, tour and visit with “Miss Laura,” guided tour of Fort Smith, tour and included dinner at the Clayton House, and all applicable taxes and fees.
