There is a place in Far West Texas where night skies are dark as coal and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. Here, at the end of the road, hundreds of bird species take refuge in a solitary mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus bloom in sublime southwestern sun, and diversity of species is the best in the country. This magical place is Big Bend! Discover wide-open spaces as we travel to many of Texas’ historical highlights such as; the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Fort Worth Stockyards, Fort Stockton, Marfa’s Marvelous Lights, Fort Davis National Historic Site, the McDonald Observatory for a Star Gazing Party, Big Bend National Park, the ghost town of Terlingua, and more! Big Bend blends its stunning views, rich history, tales of lost gold, mining and pioneer ranching to create the ultimate western experience! The first stop on our tour takes us to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and Fort Worth Stockyards- where cowboy boots, rodeo, and Longhorn Steer are a daily part of life. From original brick walkways, to the wooden corrals-the Stockyards are truly where the West begins! We will continue our journey West as we overnight and rest in Abilene, Texas. We kick off the next day at one of Texas’ famed museums-Frontier Texas! Located in historic downtown Abilene, Frontier Texas is a western heritage center that allows us to relive the Old West through the magic of state-of-the-art technology. Frontier Texas brings the frontier to life and lets us meet people who played out their lives on the Texas frontier. Deep in the heart of West Texas, we will enjoy an included lunch as we make our way to the Historic Fort Stockton. A true treasure in Texas-Fort Stockton’s history reflects the tale of the American frontier, when Comanche Indians, cattle rustlers, and American soldiers came to find water, buffalo, or just a stiff drink. While in Fort Stockton we will also spend time at the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, where pioneer artifacts are on display depicting the heritage and development of Fort Stockton and surrounding areas. The next two nights will be spent at Indian Lodge, a natural beauty resting in the middle of Fort Davis. With its white adobe walls, and historic aura, Indian Lodge is a welcomed Oasis in West Texas. At 5,050 feet, Fort Davis is the highest town in Texas…meaning cooler climate, beautiful mountain scenery, starry skies, and amazing wildlife! By day we will visit Fort Davis-one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars’ frontier military post in the Southwest, followed by the McDonald Observatory-an astronomical observatory providing incredible views into far away galaxies! By night we are swept away by the wide-open western skies! First witness the unexplained phenomena of Marfa’s marvelous lights. The mystery lights on the horizon are sometimes red, sometimes blue, sometimes white, and usually appear randomly throughout the night-no matter the season or the weather. Then, we go back to the McDonald Observatory for an exciting Star Party! The observatory is under one of the darkest night skies in all the United States and hosts astronomers from around the world. The Star Party is led by knowledgeable staffers who point out sky constellations, celestial objects, mesmerizing planets, unique stars, and more! Live viewing is done through impressive telescopes so that you may truly experience a far-away world! After our time in Fort Davis, we head Big Bend National Park-all while experiencing more historical western sites, and scenic views along the way. We will spend two nights at Lajitas Resort while we discover the National Park. Just moments from our doorsteps we are greeted by the sweeping views of the Chisos Mountains as we enter into Big Bend National Park! The splendid isolation of Big Bend takes us to a world of uncharted territory, yet along some of the same routes the Camanche warriors once traveled on! And tales of mining, ranching, bandits, Native American’s and more offer a glimpse into the old Texas Western ways. Not far from Big Bend we will also spend time in the Terlingua Ghost Town-a real mining town that went bust, and miners walked away-leaving everything they had behind. You’ll find a ghost town made up of decaying buildings, mine shafts, tall tales, but most importantly-a fully operational saloon! A glimpse at once was leads us into what is- as we start to make our journey back to Little Rock.
