There is a place in Far West Texas where night skies are dark as coal and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. Here, at the end of the road, hundreds of bird species take refuge in a solitary mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus bloom in sublime southwestern sun, and diversity of species is the best in the country. This magical place is Big Bend! From original brick walkways, to the wooden corrals-the Stockyards are truly where the West begins! We will continue our journey West as we overnight and rest in Abilene, Texas. We kick off the next day at one of Texas’ famed museums-Frontier Texas! Located in historic downtown Abilene, Frontier Texas is a western heritage center that allows us to relive the Old West through the magic of state-of-the-art technology. Frontier Texas brings the frontier to life and lets us meet people who played out their lives on the Texas frontier. Deep in the heart of West Texas, we will enjoy an included lunch as we make our way to the Historic Fort Stockton. While in Fort Stockton we will also spend time at the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, where pioneer artifacts are on display depicting the heritage and development of Fort Stockton and surrounding areas. The next two nights will be spent at Indian Lodge, a natural beauty resting in the middle of Fort Davis. With its white adobe walls, and historic aura, Indian Lodge is a welcomed Oasis in West Texas. By night we are swept away by the wide-open western skies! First witness the unexplained phenomena of Marfa’s marvelous lights. The mystery lights on the horizon are sometimes red, sometimes blue, sometimes white, and usually appear randomly throughout the night-no matter the season or the weather. Then, we go back to the McDonald Observatory for an exciting Star Party! The observatory is under one of the darkest night skies in all the United States and hosts astronomers from around the world.
